Kora merges the worlds of beautiful jewelry and socially-minded economic development in the belief that these two things need not be mutually exclusive. Kora, meaning ‘to work’ in Kinyarwandan, Rwanda’s native language, Kora's jewelry collection helps to create jobs and support sustainable development in the African countries in which the items are produced. Each one-of-a-kind item is locally sourced in Nairobi, Kenya, Rwanda and Ghana, and are produced from rescued, reclaimed and recycled materials such as horn, glass, aluminum, brass, and silver.
The artisans who craft each piece are paid a fair trade wage, thereby promoting sustainable economic success and providing the crucial capital necessary to build their new businesses successfully. Supporting sustainable development does not mean Kora sacrifices its fashion-forward aesthetic. With a range of striking bangles, cuffs, earrings, necklaces and rings, Kora's modern, minimalist look is the perfect accent for any girl's wardrobe.
Founded in 2009 by Maxandra Short and Amy Walker, Kora quickly gained attention and merit in the fashion and accessory industries. Originally based in Los Angeles, California, Kora made the move from the West Coast to New York City, where they are currently based. The design duo gains inspiration from unusual found objects, blending design and eco-friendly business practices.
